New York Barber Mark Lang Interview

New York Barber and hairstylist

Denise Pulton: Good morning, Mark, and thank you for taking the time to speak with me today.

Mark Lang: Good morning Denise, thanks for having me.

DP: As a barber, you have a unique perspective on men's grooming trends. Are there any particular hair styles that you have been seeing more of recently?

ML: Lately, we've seen a trend towards shorter, more textured hairstyles. The "short and messy" look is very popular, and clients are also asking for ways to add volume and texture to their hair. Additionally, beards and facial hair are still very much in style and we are seeing a lot of requests for shaping, trimming and grooming of beards.

DP: As a professional, what do you find to be the most rewarding aspect of your job?

ML: I love the artistry of it. Barbering is both a science and an art, and being able to take a client's vision and bring it to life is extremely rewarding. I also love the camaraderie that comes with working in a barbershop. It's a great environment to work in and we always have a good time.

DP: On the other hand, what are some of the challenges you face in your profession?

ML: One of the things that can be challenging is when clients come in with unrealistic expectations. It's important for us to set realistic expectations and communicate clearly about what can and can't be achieved with their hair. It can also be tough on the hands, as we are doing precise work for several hours a day.

DP: Are there any men's hair care or shave products that you particularly love or recommend to your clients?

ML: I really like the American Crew line of men's hair care products. Their grooming products are great for adding volume and texture to hair. As for shave products, I am a big fan of the Art of Shaving products. They offer a great line of shaving cream and aftershave products that leave the skin feeling smooth and moisturized.

DP: Can you tell me a little bit about the rise in interest in straight razor shaving? What are some of the benefits of straight razor shaving?

ML: Yes, there has definitely been a resurgence of interest in traditional wet shaving methods. The benefits of using a straight razor include a much closer and smoother shave, as well as a more enjoyable shaving experience. It's also a more eco-friendly option, as straight razors can be used for many years and don't require disposable blades.

DP: Can you tell me a bit about your favorite hair shears company and what you like about them?

ML: My favorite shears company is Saki Shears. They make extremely high-quality shears that are incredibly sharp and precise. They also have a great balance and weight, which is important for doing precision work. I've been using their shears for several years now and I've never been disappointed.

DP: What do you have in mind for the future of your barber business?

ML: My goal is to continue to grow my client base and establish myself as one of the top barbers in the area. I would also like to start offering more specialized services, such as straight razor shaving and hair coloring. Additionally, I am working on building my online presence and experimenting with different ways to market myself and my business on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

DP: Building an online presence is crucial these days, how are you approaching that aspect?

ML: I make sure to post frequently on my Instagram and TikTok account, showcasing my work, giving grooming tips and behind-the-scenes looks at my barbershop. I also interact with my followers and other barbers in the community to build a following and create a sense of community. And I also make sure to stay on top of current trends and post content that's relevant to what people are searching for in terms of hairstyles, grooming products and tips.
